Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos is the leading master of the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) in Canada. Born to Filipino parents in Japan, in 1969 Ramos moved to the USA but later returned to Japan and studied shakuhachi under several teachers where he learned the instrument’s varied repertoire: honkoyku (original Zen music), sankyoku (secular chamber music) and gendai kyoku (new style pieces). The delicate sounds of the shakuachi are truly beautiful.

Katari Taiko has the distinction of being the first taiko drum group formed in Canada and has developed a large and enthusiastic popular following. Since its inception in 1979, this Asian-Canadian company has performed throughout Canada and the U.S. The group has appeared in numerous festivals in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, St. John, and Seattle. They have also performed in a number of theatre settings including the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

The band features Nicaraguan singer-songwriter David Lopez, with Grammy Grammy Award-winning percussionist Toto Berriel on congas, Latin Jazz trumpeter Malcolm Aiken, and a groove-heavy rhythm section featuring Chris Couto on timbales, Aaron McKinney on bass, and pianist Niho Takase.
