JILLIAN LEBECK
... a prodigious talent ...
The Westender Newspaper
A native Vancouverite, pianist/vocalist/ composer Jillian Lebeck is one of the most dynamic and exciting new voices to emerge on the West Coast jazz scene in recent years. Her influences are broad and diverse as she blends mainstream jazz with the sounds of the ECM, popular music and classical elements.

Jillian has been the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships including the BMG Jazz Award, Yamaha Rising Star Award, Fraser McPherson Scholarship for Young Instrumentalists, and Berklee College of Music Scholarship where she studied with trumpeter Tiger Okoshi and saxophonist George Garzone. Jillian Lebeck's Quintet was featured in CBC Radio's Studio One Jazz Series during the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the group has also been showcased on CBC's "Hot Air" and "After Hours".
Summer 2004 was a breakout time for Jillian Lebeck with her performance at the TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Lebeck and her superb quintet opened for jazz star, Joe Lovano, at the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts.

With a quartet version of the group, Lebeck also performed at the Victoria, Montreal and Ottawa jazz festivals and played five nights at one of Toronto's main jazz venues, the Top O' the Senator.

It's not surprising that Lebeck landed these plum gigs given the wondrous allure of Living in Pieces, her debut CD (Maximum Jazz/Universal).
Whether performing as a soloist or with her swinging jazz trio, Jillian plays originals and jazz standards plus some fresh takes on pop classics. She has performed at many of Vancouver's finest venues including the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, O'Doul's Restaurant, Terminal City Club and Brock House, in addition to many major hotels.

Jillian Lebeck's sultry vocal renditions and sophisticated piano stylings create a warm engaging atmosphere for any event.

Inevitably Jillian Lebeck will be compared to Diana Krall but this 20-something preternaturally sophisticated jazz singer, pianist and composer has perhaps more of a true jazz soul to her.

There's also some Norah Jones in Lebeck's brandy-and-fireplace singing.
CODA MAGAZINE

Lebeck displays a warm voice with a rich middle register reading Norah Jones territory by performing a country-tinged tune with a jazz musician's sensibility.
